Tips & Advice

February 2011
Please make sure, if you decide to put piggies out on grass, that its not wet or cold.
In our opinion it is a little to early.  If you do want to put them in a run outside maybe place on concrete with a towel to line the base and lots of hay.  maybe put a blanket over a third of it to keep it warm

Please also be aware that new spring grass can be a little to rich on piggies tummies so do it gradually.

November 2010
Piggies need to be kept warm and free from damp.

No more putting on grass as it is too wet.  An idea is to place on a path or patio place an old towel within the floor of the run and then they will still have place to run.  Only if its warm enough.  All holiday makers and the our 8 own piggies have runs in the garage.

If your piggies are in a shed or gaarge with electricity available, invest in a 1.5w oil-filled radiator... a very good worth while buy and will cost approx 10-20p an hour depending on your supplier.

September 2010:

Weather, at night time, has got a little chilly.
Remember to add extra hay or even some fleece.
Maybe throw a single sleeping bag over the hutch in the evening to make it a little more cosy.

June 2010:

It is going to be a scorching weekend. Remember to get those frozen bottles out of the freezer wrapped in a towel or a sock and popped in your piggies run or hutch.

Good idea to keep a thermometer nearby to make sure they are not too hot!!!

Lots of shade and lots of water to drink.  Cucumbers are a great way to keep your piggies hydrated too

 The Hot Weather

Please make sure when leaving your guinea pigs in their exercise run they have lots of shady areas.

I always place an old towel/sheet over half the apex run so that most of it is in shade.

If it gets very hot, drip the towel/sheet in water, wring it out and place over the run.

This is great air conditioning for hutches as well.

Guinea pigs are prone to heat stroke so also remember hutches can heat up very quickly too.  If you think your piggie is suffering from heat stroke contact your vets.

Hay

Dawkins Pet Shop on Union Street, Andover are doing bags for £1.40

For cold nights

Remember to add extra layers in your piggies’ hutch and maybe buy a duvet or sleeping bag from a charity shop and throw over the hutch for that extra warmth.

Or

if you have an old fleece jumper or cardigan, chop it into small blankets (remembering to remove zips and/or buttons).  Great way to keep your beloved pet warm.  Just brush off the hay and poop off and throw in the washing machine.
